The school holidays start on 21 November, and for a lot of families that means a flight out of Changi sometime in December. Getting to the airport sounds like the easy part. Then the day arrives, someone can't find their passport, the kids need the toilet one more time, and you're in the lift wondering if you've left early enough.
Here's how to get the timing right, which days to watch out for, and how to get everyone (and all those suitcases) to the airport in one go.
So, how early should you reach Changi?
For an international flight with bags to check in, aim to be at the airport three hours before departure. That's around when most airline counters open, and it leaves room for queues, a forgotten charger or a toddler meltdown.
Counters also close earlier than people expect. Most airlines, Singapore Airlines and Scoot included, close their counters about an hour before departure. Turn up after that and you won't be flying, even if the plane is still sitting at the gate.
If you've checked in online and only have hand luggage, two hours is usually fine on a normal day. In December, with kids or grandparents in tow, we'd stick with three.
Working out your pickup time
Take your flight time, subtract three hours, then subtract the drive. Most homes in Singapore are 20 to 45 minutes from Changi by road, depending on where you live and the time of day.
Say your flight leaves at 9.30am and you live in Jurong West. You want to be at the airport by 6.30am, so a pickup at about 5.40am gives you a little buffer for traffic and that one bag that refuses to zip.
The busiest days this December
December is Changi's busiest month. In December 2025 the airport handled 6.3 million passenger movements, and the busiest single day was Saturday 20 December, when more than 223,000 people passed through. The year before, it was Saturday 21 December, with about 226,000.
Notice the pattern? The Saturday before Christmas has topped the list two years running. This year, that's Saturday 19 December. If you're flying that weekend, give yourself the full three hours and book your ride early, because it'll feel like the whole island is heading the same way.
Check in early at Jewel and drop the bags
This one makes a big difference when you have kids. Selected airlines, including Singapore Airlines and Scoot, let you check in and drop your bags at the Early Check-in Lounge on Level 1 of Jewel. It's open daily from 8am to 11.59pm, and depending on the airline you can check in hours before your flight. Singapore Airlines allows up to 24 hours ahead.
Once the bags are gone, the pressure is off. Have lunch, let the kids watch the Rain Vortex, then wander over to departures when it's time. Every airline has its own window, so look yours up on Changi Airport's early check-in page before you go.
Planning to do this? Tell us when you book and we'll drop you at Jewel instead of your terminal.
Catching an early morning flight?
The MRT can't help much here. The first train to the airport leaves Tanah Merah at 5.20am, or 5.47am on Sundays and public holidays. Add the ride from your home station and the walk with luggage, and depending on where you live, you may not reach the terminal until well after 6am. For a flight before about 9am, that's cutting it too fine.
Flying from Terminal 4? It isn't on the MRT line at all, so you'd also need the free shuttle bus from Terminal 2.
For early flights, book your car the day before, so you're not standing downstairs at 4am refreshing an app. Our drivers work through the night. And so there are no surprises, trips between 11pm and 6.30am carry a S$10 midnight surcharge.
One vehicle for the whole family
Most taxis seat four. Add grandparents, a helper or just a lot of luggage, and families end up splitting into two cars, with one half waiting at the kerb for the other.
A maxi cab keeps everyone together. Here's how our vehicles work out for airport runs:
- 7-seater maxi cab (S$60): up to seven people with cabin-size bags. Bringing big suitcases? Plan on fewer people.
- 9-seater maxi cab (S$65): the one most families end up in. Luggage goes behind the back row, so the more bags you bring, the fewer seats you can use.
- 13-seater minibus (S$70): carries 13 people with no luggage, 11 people with 5 pieces, or 9 people with 9 pieces. Ideal when two families fly together.
- Toyota Alphard or Vellfire (S$80): up to six people in reclining captain seats, for when you'd like the ride to feel like part of the holiday.
All prices are nett and include ERP and car park charges. When you book, tell us how many people and how many bags you have (prams and golf bags count), and we'll make sure everything fits.
Don't forget the trip home
Book your return pickup at the same time, so you're not standing at arrivals with tired kids and a trolley full of bags, trying to sort out a ride.
For airport pickups we include 70 minutes of free waiting from the moment you land, which covers immigration and baggage collection. If you'd like your driver waiting for you in the arrival hall, add our Meet & Greet service for S$10. Otherwise your driver will be on standby at the airport and will contact you once your flight lands to arrange where to meet.
Your checklist for the week before
- Check your terminal on your e-ticket or airline app. Airlines do move terminals from time to time.
- Check in online as soon as it opens, and see if your airline offers early check-in at Jewel.
- Count your bags, including prams, golf bags and boxes.
- Book your ride at least a day ahead, and earlier if you're flying around 19 December.
- Travelling with a baby or toddler? We don't provide child seats, so bring your own if you use one. Your driver will help you fit it.
- Pay before the trip. PayNow, PayLah! and bank transfer all work.
That's really all there is to it. Leave a little earlier than feels necessary, keep the family in one vehicle, and the holiday starts when you shut the front door, not after a mad dash to Terminal 3. If you'd like us to take care of the airport run, you can book online or WhatsApp us any time, day or night.
